What I didn’t say

 What I didn’t say

What I didn’t say to you
When I said I was trying so hard
Was that I was trying so hard
Not to die at 72,
The age of my mother’s death.

I don’t know how to be
Older than that. I have no
Pattern to follow, no guide
Into graceful old age.

If you will take my hand
Firmly in your strong hard one,
I will let you lead me
Into uncharted territories
As once you led me
To the Pacific Northwest.

That worked out okay. I trust you.
Just please:
Don’t let go.
